While most of us are familiar with health problems associated with air pollution, many are unaware that indoor air quality can be a problem, too. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency lists poor indoor air quality as one of the top health concerns facing Americans.
An air purification system can significantly improve the air quality in your home by removing allergens and particles typically found in the Raleigh area. Ridding your home of dust, pollen, pet dander and mold can help ease sneezing, coughing, runny noses, itchy eyes or even asthma attacks. A few air purification tools:
- Ultraviolet light air cleaners are also called germicidal lights, because they sterilize microorganisms in your air, rendering them unable to reproduce. UV light cleaners sterilize the air by passing air under a UV light in the unit, which is installed in your existing heating and cooling equipment.
- HEPA air filters can trap particles much smaller than filters traditionally used in your heating and cooling system. Some of these filters contain carbon, which traps chemicals. They can also trap volatile organic compounds emitted from paint, countertops, cupboards, cleaning products and carpet. However, not all heating and cooling equipment is compatible with HEPA filters; check your owner’s guide or consult a professional before installing one.
- Ionizer purifiers use a charged surface within the unit to collect particles in the air. These purifiers are usually filter-free, and only require you to wash off the charged collection plate periodically.
- Whole-home air purification systems work as part of your heating and cooling system. Some can take care of all three types of indoor air contaminants: particles such as dust, dirt and pollen; airborne micro-organisms such as mold spores, bacteria and viruses; and odors and chemical vapors.
